Pikes Peak Hospice expands Inpatient Care Center in Colorado Springs: KRDO News – June 21, 2024

Nonprofit hospice to add 12-bed inpatient floor at its Colorado Springs headquarters: Colorado Gazette – June 26, 2024

Why is an onsite Inpatient Care Center needed?

Many features make Pikes Peak Hospice and Palliative Care (PPHPC) unique in serving our patients and their families. One of the most important differentiators is our Hospice Inpatient Unit, which allows us to provide specialized medical care to patients at end-of-life and support their loved ones.

With the population in our region continuing to expand, the need for hospice services and specifically for inpatient hospice care continues to increase. And our current inpatient unit has proven to be too small to meet our community’s needs.

To better meet the needs of patients and their families, we are constructing a state-of-the-art hospice Inpatient Care Center (ICC) at our 2550 Tenderfoot Hill Street location. This will expand our patient rooms from 8 to 12.

An ICC in our own building allows us to design a beautiful, home-like environment nestled in a quiet location. A freestanding ICC will provide our community amenities that bring increased comfort and dignity at end-of-life.

A History of Inpatient Care

null

Pikes Peak Hospice & Palliative Care leases space at Penrose Hospital on the 3rd floor.

null

Hospice Care Residence opens on Darby Street. This was the first free-standing hospice care residence in the State of Colorado. The mortgage for this facility was paid in full in 1988 and closed in 1996.

null

Hospice at the Mount opened in September. This was a 13 bed facility housed in a private wing at St. Francis Nursing Center. Three more beds were contracted in 1992. This facility later closed in 1994.

null

We opened “Central Residence”, 18 beds on the 5th floor at St. Francis Hospital.

null

Hospice Care Residence closed and PPH leased the 4th and 5th floors, 30 patient rooms, at St. Francis Hospital, consolidating our inpatient facility care. These floors were called Pikes Peak Hospice Residence.

null

The 5th floor of the Pikes Peak Hospice Residence moved to the 4th floor, increasing the number of beds to 37.

null

PPH opened the 16 private patient bed Inpatient Unit at Penrose-St. Francis Hospital.

null

The COVID epidemic caused us to relinquish 8 rooms, leaving us with 8 rooms to serve our community. These private suites are often full, resulting in a waitlist that delays care for some patients, and prevents some patients from receiving hospice care before they die.

null

In 2023, PPHPC served 1,782 hospice and palliative care patients – 473 in our Inpatient Unit. Our Center for Grief & Loss provided services to over 1,000 clients and care givers.

Uniquely Positioned to Serve Our Community

Since 1982, PPHPC has been providing holistic, hands-on, compassionate care to hospice patients in a hospice inpatient setting. We specialize in short-term management of uncontrolled pain and other highly challenging symptoms. We offer respite stays for patients whose caregivers need relief. These are the hallmarks of our care.

To this day, there is no other hospice inpatient care center in the Colorado Springs region. The only option for terminally ill patients and their loved ones to receive specialized care 24/7/365 by hospice clinicians and providers is through our hospice inpatient unit.

PPHPC is Colorado Springs’ leading community-based non-profit provider of hospice, palliative care, and grief support services. Honoring every moment of life, PPHPC provides compassionate, high-quality, comprehensive care for those with an advanced medical condition and for those who are grieving.

Our service area includes all of El Paso County, and parts of Teller and Elbert Counties. Our hospice services are delivered where patients live, either at home, in a long-term care facility, or temporarily in our inpatient hospice unit.

A Dedicated Space Designed to Meet the Most Challenging Time

Our ICC will be a refuge for patients in need of symptom management who don’t want to be hospitalized. Each patient suite will serve as the patient’s home away from home, with shelves and space for families to bring picture frames and personal belongings. Our pet-friendly ICC will encourage the visit of a beloved pet, often a vital family member.

A freestanding ICC in a quiet, home-like setting is designed to meet the needs of patients and their loved ones. It will include a kitchen and family dining room, a great room overlooking a beautiful garden, a multi-faith chapel, veteran reflection room, children’s play area, places for quiet contemplation, and spaces that accommodate the needs of multiple generations. Original artwork by local artists will decorate our art walk. Surrounding the ICC will be the comforting garden area, beautiful pathways, relaxing benches, and a pavilion for visitors to gather and connect.

Pikes Peak Hospice team members will staff the ICC and visit with patients day and night.  Our Physicians and Nurse Practitioners will make daily patient rounds, our nurses will provide care, and other team members — social workers, chaplains, music therapists, pet therapists, and more — visit assigned patients. Families are included in our care. Our team members get to know loved ones and enhance the quality of life for patients and families.

Furthering the Mission

The ICC is a community endeavor – built by the community for the community. The ICC will allow us to meet the need of those on hospice and serve them and their loved ones in an inviting, serene environment. An ICC will allow us to continue furthering our mission to:

  • To provide compassionate and expert end-of-life care to patients and their loved ones.
  • To partner with those who share our vision.
  • To lead change in the community to ensure comfort for all who face serious illness.
  • And, due to philanthropy, we will continue serving everyone in need, regardless of an inability to pay.

Renovation Plan Timeline

  • null
Construction will begin in July 2024.
  • null
Construction is expected to conclude in March 2025.

The anticipated opening of the ICC in May 2025 will be marked by an official ribbon cutting: symbolizing a significant milestone in our commitment to enhancing end-of-life care in our community.

Financing / Budget / Major Donations

The guaranteed maximum price (GMP) for the ICC was finalized by Nunn Construction after RTA Architects delivered the revised construction documents following value engineering efforts. Anticipated pricing will be ~$8.1M, encompassing construction, development and associated expenses.

Pikes Peak Hospice Foundation has provided a lead gift of $3.5M – showcasing their commitment towards the ICC’s mission and impact.

Fundraising efforts by the PPHPC Foundation to bridge the financial gap includes targeted campaigns towards individuals, organizations, corporate sponsors who align with our vision.

Pikes Peak Hospice & Palliative Care Capital to cover various expenses including design fees, permits, and administrative costs with project implementation.

Return on Investment

The Inpatient Care Center (ICC) project represents a sound investment with significant potential for long-term returns. With an annual rental lease projected at $248,412 for 8-patient rooms versus a facility operating expense of $219,000, the ICC demonstrates strong financial viability.

Moreover, the ICC’s impact extends beyond financial metrics, encompassing intangible benefits such as improved quality of life for patients and their families, enhanced community well-being, and the fulfillment of Pikes Peak Hospice and Palliative Care’s mission to provide compassionate end-of-life care to all in need.

Economic Impact

Nunn Construction and RTA Architects are local, Colorado Springs based companies. Ongoing operation of our ICC will add approximately 14 jobs to the community including Facilities Manager, Janitorial Services, Cooks, and additional clinical roles (Nurses, CNAs, Social Worker).
